Exotic Animal World - Butterfly World

Exotic Animal World - Butterfly World, one of the more unique attractions of the Western Cape Winelands, consists of a tropical garden in a 1500 m2 green house. This luxuriant paradise makes the free flying exotic butterflies feel right at home.

The butterfly park is located at the cross roads of the Paarl, Stellenbosch and Wellington Wine Routes, near the small Boland town of Klapmuts. Just off the N1 at Exit 47, on the Route 44 (300m to the south), it is very accessible to the many tourists visiting the area.

In the stunning garden tropical butterflies from Central America and Southeast Asia can be seen. In separate enclosures visitors walk in between birds, common marmosets, green iguanas and a couple of blue duiker, all free to roam the garden where they want.

The Martin Filmer Spider Room displays indigenous and exotic spiders and scorpions in locked glass terraria and teaches the public to respect and appreciate these animals. The myths and fears surrounding these eight legged creatures are many and usually unfounded. Seeing the scary scorpion through glass, taking a good look and reading the relevant information, often create more interest than revulsion

Visitors can spend time in the Reptile Bay where Madagascan reptiles (chameleons and plated lizards), tortoises, Australian skinks and bearded dragons and a couple of noisy parrots are housed. A large aviary hosts all kinds of ex-pet birds such as budgies, love birds, pigeons and doves, as well as guinea pigs with wild hair!

A set butterfly display in the Spider room provides more information on the lives and habits of butterflies. Instead of boring rows and rows of dead butterflies, the collection is divided by regions of origin. Western Cape butterflies are displayed on a background depicting a wine farm, and the South American butterflies against a painting of the Amazon rain forest.

The gift shop has butterfly related items for sale and the Jungle Leaf Café provides light meals and refreshments for those taking a break from butterfly watching. .

Our beautiful outdoor garden hosts a meerkat enclosure and lots of free range ducks and chickens, waiting for children to feed them with packets of seeds bought from the gift shop. A LAPA with a kiosk and activities for sale can keep children busy.

Picnic facilities:

The LAPA kiosk provides refreshments to guests wanting to spend some time in our outdoor garden. Regretfully no formal picnic facilities are available and own food is not allowed. The LAPA facility is available exclusively for the use of Butterfly World clients with valid entry tickets for the day.

Butterfly releases:

Butterfly World is not in the business of providing butterflies for releases for any reason whatsoever.
