A quick ride up the cable car is all you need to experience this famous landmark. If the weather is favourable, you will have 360-degree views of the “Mother City” which are breathtaking from this vantage point. What makes Table Mountain so unique is that it forms an innate amphitheater around the City which is rare. If the weather is not favourable, don’t despair, the tour will take you up to the top of Signal Hill which also has spectacular views. Our Cape town guide will provide you with a wealth of information on the day.
From there, the tour continues on to the oldest remaining colonial structure in South Africa, the Castle of Good Hope. The Castle of Good Hope was built as a naval replenishment base by the Dutch East India Company in the late 1960’s.
The tour then takes you on a historical drive through the Mother City indicating the prominent landmarks as you go by. You will see, among other things the Houses of Parliament, Company Gardens and the Greenmarket Square but to name a few.
Our next region of interest is the Bo-Kaap area, essentially a Township; it is the heart of the Cape Malay culture in Cape Town and was formerly known as the Malay Quarter. It is situated surrounding Signal Hill and the architecture here is historical of what Cape Town would have been like 200 years ago.
At the top of Signal Hill, you will witness the discharging of the Noon Day Gun. The firing of the cannon on a daily basis is one of Cape Town’s oldest traditions and the 2 cannons used (one for backup) are two of the oldest in the world that are still being used on a daily basis.
After lunch we board the Robben Island Ferry for a short boat trip to Robben Island. While travelling across to Robben Island you will have fantastic views of Cape Town and Table Mountain. Robben Island is one of the most recognisable prisons in the world due to the 18-year incarceration of Mr. Nelson Mandela in this facility. Mr. Nelson Mandela is no doubt one of the most famous prisoners and leaders in the world and the tour of Robben Island incudes a nostalgic stop at his cell, in the same condition as it was while he was incarcerated at the facility. All tours are fully guided by past political prisoners which offer visitors a truly exceptional understanding of the prison’s history and the personal plight of the prisoners during their time in prison.
From the prison, you will be transported by bus to the lime quarry where all the prisoners were required to perform hard labour, including Mr. Mandela. Additional places of interest you will see include the Lepers’ Graveyard, the shrine (Kramat) of Tuan Guru and the house in which Robert Sobukwe spent 9 years living in solitary confinement.
The tour of Robben Island takes approximately 3.5 hours which includes the ferry ride there and back.
Once your tour of Robben Island is over, your full day Table Mountain and Robben Island Private Tour of Cape Town is complete.
