Without any delay, we head off to the Stellenbosch wine route to visit The House of J.C. Le Roux. This wine estate is the leading wine estate dedicated exclusively to creating sparkling wine. It was also the first wine estate in South Africa to undertake this endeavor. Using a traditional French style technique, this wine estate creates the finest vintage Methode Cap Classiques. The House of J.C. Le Roux is renowned for its expertise, craftsmanship and proficiency at creating sparkling wines suitable for all palates. The captivating chronicle of the House of J.C. Le Roux started with a French Huguenot named Jean Le Roux, who began planting vines just after putting down roots in Stellenbosch in 1704 and his descendants sustained his honored tradition. Today, The House of J.C. Le Roux bears witness to the impact made to Devon Valley by this renowned family.
Once the tour of the wine estate is complete, we head off into the town of Stellenbosch. With the Hottentots Holland Mountains as a backdrop, this town is no doubt one of the quaintest in South Africa. All the streets are lined with big Oak trees and the combination of this and the gable Cape Dutch homesteads give this village a charm that is hard to forget.
You will have time at this stop to wander around the village and visit the various art & craft shops, you may also visit the Stellenbosch museum (own account) which gives you great insight into the history of South Africa and the background to the culture of Stellenbosch itself.
Our next stop on this tour is at the Lanzerac Wine Estate. This wine estate arose in 1962 when Isaac Schrijver was granted a piece of land by the then Governor of The Cape, Simon Van Der Stel, and it has since grown into the most iconic South African wine estate it is today.
The Lanzerac Wine Estate has a wonderfully relaxing wine tasting room where you can choose from a variety of tasting including the ever popular; the Savoury Pairing, the Hand selected Chocolate Pairing and the Carnivore Tasting.
Next we travel to the Franschhoek Valley which is acclaimed as the wine and food heartland of South Africa. Sheltered amongst the mountains, you can sometimes even feel like you have been transported to Switzerland. You will be surrounded by picturesque scenery, delicious cuisine, generous hospitality and the finest wines, not a place you will easily forget. You will be given time to have lunch in Franschhoek (own account), so why not try some fresh trout, which is another produce Franschhoek is known for.
After lunch, we head off to the Solms Delta Wine Estate which is different from all the other wine farms in the Franschhoek area. It produces classical, highly acclaimed wines but also offers a variety of diverse highlights throughout the year drawing a wide range of patrons. Magical forest picnics can be experienced all year as well as modern Cape gastronomy at its celebrated Fyndraai restaurant.
The farm also hosts a harvest festival every year that draws visitors from all around the world. To add to the intrigue, the farm includes a museum that studies the slave tradition of the area and with six specialised guided tours that surpass the predictable wine tasting experience, the Solms Delta Wine Estate will be a stop you won’t forget easily.
